Date Set For Leandro Lo Murder Trial

The trial date for Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo, the Military Police Lieutenant accused of murdering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Leandro Lo, has finally been set. This long-awaited development comes nearly three years after the tragic incident that shocked the global Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) community. Lo’s untimely death in August 2022 left an indelible mark on his family, friends, and practitioners of the sport worldwide, who continue to mourn the loss of one of BJJ’s most celebrated athletes.

The trial is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. on May 22, 2025, in São Paulo. Since his arrest shortly after the incident, Velozo has been held in Romão Gomes Military Prison. Initially, his officer’s salary was suspended; however, a judicial ruling later reinstated it, citing the principle of presumption of innocence. Despite this legal decision, the case has faced significant delays, prolonging the grief and frustration of those seeking justice for Lo.

The events leading to Lo’s death unfolded during a nightclub show in São Paulo. A disagreement reportedly arose between Lo and Velozo, escalating when Velozo approached Lo’s table. The confrontation turned physical, with Lo reportedly subduing Velozo during an altercation. Witness accounts suggest that after being released by Lo, Velozo allegedly retrieved a firearm and fatally shot him in the head. The crime has been classified as triple-qualified homicide due to its particularly heinous nature—committed with vile motives, cruel means, and circumstances that left Lo unable to defend himself.

If convicted, Velozo could face a prison sentence ranging from 12 to 30 years under Brazil’s Code of Criminal Procedure. The trial represents not only a pursuit of justice for Lo but also a moment of reckoning for those impacted by this devastating loss.

Leandro Lo’s murder sent shockwaves through the BJJ community and beyond. As an eight-time world champion and a revered figure in martial arts, his legacy transcended competition mats. His death was not only a personal tragedy for those who knew him but also a collective loss for practitioners and fans who admired his skill, dedication, and sportsmanship. The pain felt by his loved ones continues to resonate deeply within the global BJJ family.

As this case moves forward, it serves as a sombre reminder of life’s fragility and the enduring impact of violence. The BJJ community remains united in its grief while holding onto hope that justice will prevail for one of its greatest icons.
